Established by the Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley in 1982. The Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania's mission is to obtain food and distribute it to people in need through area non-profits and to provide resources for education and advocacy to end hunger. Second Harvest operates in a six county service area comprised of Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon, Monroe, Pike and Wayne counties. Last year Second Harvest distributed 9.4 million pounds of food to its network of more than 200 non-profit agencies including emergency food pantries and meal centers as well as homeless shelters, child care agencies, addiction treatment programs and just about any agency that feeds people as part of their operation. Collectively this network serves more than 60,000 people each month! In addition to food distribution, Second Harvest operates The Seed Farm which provides new farmers with valuable and practical experience and skills on a training farm, and administers supplemental nutrition programs for children and seniors (Backpack Buddies and SUNshine Box Programs), active duty military, reservists, and veterans (MilitaryShare), SNAP (foot stamp) outreach and application assistance, Share Our Strength's Cooking Matters nutrition education program and anti-poverty advocacy initiatives. Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania is committed to providing the healthiest food possible to the families that need it most. With the support of a generous community, Second Harvest is nourishing and strengthening the community.
